Get ready for it, the inevitable is upon us with a few days of teasing but the snow has made an appearance.  Lucky for us Edmotonians it has decided not to stay yet, but we know it will be here to stay shortly.   Over the years we have heard the same questions from first time buyers but also from already home owners who just don’t know, so we have decided to share some winterizing tips with you on preparing your home for our Alberta’s harsh winters.

  • Get your furnace cleaned – it can help maintain your furnaces life expectancy and help you breathe easier.
  • Clean or replace furnace filter
  • Clean humidifier
  • Check doors for worn or damaged weather stripping to prevent heat loss
  • Inspect / Clean fireplaces to limit the risk of a fire and drafts (should be done yearly)
  • Check for adequate attic insulation and top it up if needed to prevent heat loss.  (Believe it or not this could be an issue in newly built homes too).
  • Install foam pads behind electrical outlets on exterior walls to prevent heat loss.

  • Winterize Air Conditioning units
  • Ensure vents and holes are covered so you don’t have wildlife making themselves a cozy home at your expense.
  • Replace any exterior lights that are burnt out.
  • Seal any cracks to prevent water penetration
  • Clean out your gutters from leaves especially if you live in a mature neighborhood.
  • Rotate seasonal items to your shed – put away gardening supplies and equipment and pull out the shoves.
  • Improve any negative drainage to ensure the spring melt drains away from the foundation.
  • Blow out irrigation lines
  • Aerate lawn and fertilize it with 32-0-10 for winter
  • Trim and fertilize trees and plants. Empty plant pots and store them to prevent damage.
  • Cover outdoor furniture with a tarp or move to covered storage.
  • Remove garden hoses from outside taps and install frost free taps if you don’t already have them.

We hope you find this helpful and if you have any other items to share with us please comment below.
