Originally named Westgrove, Grovenor is an area in the west of Edmonton. There is still an office building in the neighbourhood that goes by Westgrove. It is bordered by 142nd street, 149th street, 107th avenue, and on the south the McKinnon Ravine is the divider between Grovenor and the next neighbourhood.
A main intersection through the city is Stony Plain Road, and this is located with Grovenor. The first residences in the neighbourhood were build around the ravine in the early 1900’s. According to the city website, other parts of the area go back to the 1910’s.
The railway used to be a key part of the area, but was somewhat abandoned during the 1920’s with a small resurgence during the war in the early 1940’s. It was largely used to help out with construction of the Alaska highway.
A large portion of the homes in Grovenor were build before the end of the second world war. Most of the residences in the area were build before the end of the 1980’s, with some being torn down and replaced with new properties.
