Highlands got its name by being the winning suggestion in a contest that offered a $50 prize back in 1912. It was annexed to the city at that time and is in the north east corner of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. It is bordered on the north by 118th Avenue, on the east by 59th Street and on the western edge by 67th Street. The North Saskatchewan River valley makes up the southern boundary.
Highlands is an older neighbourhood. Over 31% of the homes were built by the end of World War II. Between 1946 and 1960 an additional 47% were built. The remaining homes were built between 1961 and 1980 with the area considered complete by 1990.
Most of the homes in the area, roughly 90% are single family houses. Nearly 8% are apartments in low rise buildings of less than five stories, followed by duplexes that make up the remainder. Almost 81% of homes are lived in by their owners.
Two schools, the Highlands Public School and Mount Royal Elementary School, both part of the Edmonton Public School System, service the area. Edmonton Northland, Rexall Place, the Edmonton Commonwealth and Concordia College are all just west of the area. Whyte Avenue and the University of Alberta are to the south, accessible by 118th Avenue and Wayne Gretzky Drive.
