Laurier Heights in an area in the western part of the city that overlooks the river valley. A part of the area on Buena Vista road is sometimes referred to as Buena Vista. Almost all of the homes in Laurier Heights were build after the second world war, with nearly 60% of homes built during the 15 years from 1946 until 1960. The remainder of the residences in the neighbourhood were constructed in the 1960’s.
There are two residences for the senior population in Laurier Heights. There is also an elementary and junior high school in the neighbourhood that is operated by the public school board. A small shopping strip mall in Laurier Heights services the residents with goods and services.
One of the bigger attractions in the city is located in Laurier Heights, the Edmonton Valley Zoo. The zoo features all sorts of wildlife including some within a petting area for children. There is also easy access to two river valley parks, Laurier Heights park and Buena Vista park. Access to Hawrelak park is also available from the area via a pedestrian bridge across the river.
