The Mill Woods district in the southern part of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada made history as the first area to use a ring road system rather than the conventional grid. Eight communities make up the district; Millhurst, Millbourne, Lakewood, Southwood, Burnewood, Knottwood, Ridgewood and Woodvale.
All of these communities are connected by a major ring road. Mill Woods Road circles along the east, south and west and 38th Avenue frames the northern boundary. Smaller ring roads connect adjacent neighbourhoods. Mill Woods Town Centre and Tawa form the business and service core of the district. The Grey Nuns Community Hospital, a fire station and the Edmonton Police Service’s South East Division Headquarters are all in the Tawa area. An ETS bus terminal and the Mill Woods Town Centre shopping mall are also within the business district.
Residents also have easy access to the Mill Woods Recreation Centre in Mill Woods Park, just west of town centre, as well as the Mill Woods Golf Course. Mill Woods Park is the site of the annual Canada Day celebration each July 1st. Built on what was once the Papaschase Cree Indian Reserve, this district has the makings of a stand alone community but is very much an integral part of the city of Edmonton.
