Reverend William Newton arrived in Edmonton in 1875. The town of Newton, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada bears his name. The north is framed by the Yellowhead Trail, the south by 118th Avenue and the east by 50th Street. The western edge is 58th Street.
Development of Newton began before the end of World War II. Nearly 9% of the homes were built prior to that. Almost 46% of properties were built between 1946 and 1960. In the 1970s another 15% went up and another 18% in the 1980s. A few residences were completed in the 1990s.
The single family home makes up 88% of the housing market. About 7% are apartments and apartment style condominiums that are in buildings of less than five stories. The remaining homes are duplexes. 79% of the homes are occupied by their owners.
Two public schools service the area. One is the Newton Elementary School, part of the Edmonton Public School System. The other is the St. Leo Catholic Elementary School. Rexall Place and the Coliseum LRT Station are just to the west of the area. Abbottsfield Shoppers Village is to the east via 118th Avenue.
