Once affiliated with the town Jasper Place, the neighborhood became part of the city of Edmonton in 1964 when the two locales undertook an amalgamation. The Jasper Gates Shopping Centre is a main component of the commercial development

Almost 50 percent of West Jasper Place’s dwellings were constructed in the years between 1960 and 1980. Almost 30 percent of the area’s older residences were built before the end of World War II. An upturn in construction occurred early in the 1990s. The consequence of this building boom was that one of every ten homes in West Jasper Place had been constructed during this time.

Rental apartments account for three of every five homes in the neighborhood. Smaller condominium buildings also exist in the area. Approximately 35 percent of the housing stock is composed of single-family homes. Concurrent with the large number of rental units in the locale, there is mobility among West Jasper Place’s populace. One of every five people in the neighborhood reported that they had changed residences within the last 12 months, per the 2005 census.
