Easy access to the downtown core as well as the University of Alberta and Whyte Ave gives Westmount all the convenience of a central location while keeping the security and friendliness of a family neighbourhood. The park in the center of Westmount is one of the biggest and oldest in Edmonton and offers a large variety of activities for kids of all ages.

A quarter of the residences were built prior to WWII, another quarter were constructed before 1960, an additional third were erected between 1961 and 1980, and the rest were erected since 1980. This make Westmount one of the most architecturally diverse neighbourhoods in Edmonton. The large majority of the Westmount area is occupied by single family detached houses. The trend in Westmount is a gradual increase in occupant owned residences which means currently over half the homes are owned by the people who live in them.

Groat Road, along Westmount’s western edge, grants residents quick access to the University of Alberta and Whyte Ave across the river. The Edmonton Municipal Airport is just a few blocks to the north east of Westmount.

Westglen Elementary School and many after school and childcare centers are on the School block. Westglen is the first school in Alberta and the third in Canada to be named an Earth III school in 2008 in recognition for their environmental commitment. Culture
In 1878, Malcolm Groat built his homestead on the land that is now the Westmount neighbourhood. The Groat homestead was annexed by the City of Edmonton in 1904 and 1910. Groat gradually sold his land to developers as the demand for residential lots increased. In spite of the general oversupply of residential lots in Edmonton, Westmount developed early due to its proximity to downtown Edmonton. Access to downtown was further enhanced by the extension of an electric streetcar line in 1910 and commercial space developed along 124 Street beside the line. Westmount, particularly the area bordering the Groat Ravine, established a reputation as an attractive residential area for wealthy and professional people. The Westmount Architectural Heritage Area (WAHA) governs the architectural heritage of the area. Westmount is home to many historic houses, often in the Craftsman or Four Square style.
